Description
A comforting gratin that combines creamy cheese and earthy root vegetables, perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups sliced potatoes
- 2 cups sliced sweet potatoes
- 2 cups sliced parsnips
- 1 ½ cups grated Gruyère or aged cheddar
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme or ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Olive oil, for greasing the baking dish
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with olive oil.
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced root vegetables, garlic, thyme, salt, and pepper. Toss well to ensure even distribution of ingredients.
- Layer half of the vegetable mixture in the prepared baking dish. Top with half of the cheese.
- Pour half of the heavy cream over the first layers. Repeat the layering process with the remaining vegetables, cheese, and cream.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden and crisp.
- Allow the gratin to rest for 10 minutes before serving to let the flavors meld and the dish set.
Notes
To enhance flavor, consider adding layers of caramelized onions or sautéed mushrooms. Avoid microwaving leftovers to maintain texture.
